In DSM-IV-TR (American Psychiatric Association 2000), impulse-control disorders are listed in a residual category—the impulse-control disorders not elsewhere classified. This category includes intermittent explosive disorder, kleptomania, pyromania, pathological gambling, trichotillomania, and impulse-control disorder not otherwise specified (NOS). Potential examples of impulse-control disorders NOS are compulsive buying, repetitive self-mutilation, psychogenic excoriation (compulsive skin picking), onychophagia (severe nail biting), and problematic computer use.
