Excerpt

Neuropsychological assessment has become a popular and useful tool within the field of neuropsychiatry. The neuropsychological evaluation is focused on the formal assessment of brain-behavior relationships using psychometric methods. This evaluation provides important information regarding type and severity of brain injury, course, and process of recovery, and it is particularly useful in structuring rehabilitation. In this chapter we review the use of neuropsychological assessment within the context of traumatic brain injury (TBI) with particular reference to the neuropsychiatric evaluation and treatment of the TBI patient.
