The word pedophilia is derived from the Greek words for love (philia) and young children (pedeiktos). Pedophilia is defined as a persistent sexual interest in prepubescent children, reflected in recurrent thoughts, fantasies, urges, sexual arousal, or behavior (American Psychiatric Association 2000; World Health Organization 1997). In its strongest form, pedophilia reflects an exclusive sexual preference for prepubescent children, in which the pedophilic individual has no sexual interest in adults.
